About me

I am Dan Zeng (曾丹), an Associate Professor (Ph.D. Advisor) at School of Artificial Intelligence, Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) Zhuhai Campus.

As a biometrics and computer vision researcher, my research is motivated by a desire to enable Intelligent Perception and Understanding of Low-quality Images or Videos in Complex Scenarios. My recent research lies in AI4Biometrics and AI+Ocean, focusing on enhance intelligent biometrics perception and ocean perception through LLM, AIGC, MM-LLM, etc. My long-term research goal is to develop cutting-edge deep models that can achieve intelligent, high-quality perception and understanding even facing low quality images or videos in complex scenarios.

My current research is well-recognized by both the biometrics research community and the industry: 1) research recognition in the biometrics and computer vision field (papers have been published at TPAMI, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, IJCAI, ACMMM, ICB, etc.), 2) research proposals funded by NSFC and KNAW of the Netherlands as PI, 3) Some of my research has directly contributed to the product development in 20Face, a scaleup company at University of Twente.

I received the B.E. and Ph.D. degrees in computer science and technology from Sichuan University (SCU) in 2013 and 2018, under the supervision of Distinguished Prof. Zhisheng You(游志胜杰出教授) and Prof. Qijun Zhao(赵启军教授). Since 2012, I participated in ‘3+2+3’ talent training program at SCU (Top 2%). I worked as a post-doc research fellow in the Data Management and Biometrics (DMB) Lab at the University of Twente (UT), the Netherlands from 2018 to 2020, under the supervision of Prof. Raymond Veldhuis and Assoc. Prof. Luuk Spreeuwers. From 2020 to 2024, I served as a research assistant professor and was later promoted to research associate professor in the CSE department at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech).

Research Interests
LQ Image Perception
High fidelity low-resolution image restoration and understanding in complex surveillance scenarios is critical to enhancing the intelligence level of public safety.
AIGC for Biometrics
Emerging AI technologies can be used to revolutionize the human perception and understanding. In particular, combining AIGC with LLMs can reduce the need for labeling and protect privacy.
Ocean-AI
As the depth of water increases, different light components disappear in sequence, underwater image enhancement and low-light image enhancement are useful to facilitate the intelligent visual perception of AUV.
